Heparin Processing: The Hidden Variable in Blood Gas Accuracy

Not all heparin is equal.

The manufacturing method determines anticoagulation efficacy, electrolyte interference, and sample stability.

MeterOmega’s lyophilization sets a new standard.

Parameter Traditional Liquid / Spray-Dried Heparin MeterOmega Lyophilized Heparin
Processing method Liquid heparin sprayed or ultrasonically applied, then air-dried or oven-dried. Oxidation and uneven distribution common. Vacuum freeze-drying(-70℃).No oxidation,molecular-level uniformity.
Final concentration Typically 40-50 IU/mL to compensate for degraded activity. ≤15 IU/mL-meets IFCC/CLSI optimalstandard.
Dissolution & mixing Requires vigoros mixing immediately after draw; incomplete mixing leads to clots or hemolysis. Dissolves instantly on blood contact-no immediate mixing required.(Gentle mixing before analysis is still recommended for homogeneous sample.)
Electrolyte interference High heparin binds Ca2+ Na+,K+(Ca2+ drop up to 0.19 mmol/L). "Balanced" heparin adds compensation, introducing unpredictable bias. Negligible binding (<0.03 mmol/L Ca²⁺). No compensation additives-true ion balance.
Sample stability Heparin oxidizes over time, losing activity; short shelf life. Stable for years; maintains potency without degradation.

Patented Large‑Area Vent (Ø8.5 mm)

Our proprietary vent integrates a high‑flow microporous polymer with a secondary hydrogel seal. The 8.5 mm diameter allows extremely rapid air evacuation, enabling fast blood draw even in hypotensive patients. Upon blood contact, the vent seals instantly and releases no gel particles — protecting analyzer sensors from contamination and ensuring long‑term instrument stability.

  • Rapid air evacuation – fast draws, even in low‑pressure patients
  • Dual‑layer design seals instantly on blood contact – no gel shedding
  • Eliminates air bubbles and dead space, preserving anaerobic sample integrity
  • Protects analyzer sensors for long‑term reliability
Microscopic view: High‑porosity polymer matrix with hydrogel coating – permeable to air, impermeable to blood.

The Critical Link: Sample Quality → Analyzer Reliability

Blood gas analyzers are precision instruments. Clots, excess siliconeoil, or gel particles from poorly designed vents can clog fluid paths.coat electrodes, and cause drift or failure - leading to costly repairsand downtime.

SyringeABG™ protects your analyzer by delivering a clean, clot-freebubble-minimized sample. Our lyophilized heparin preventsmicroclots without excess heparin; our large-area vent releases nogel; and our micro-silicone coating uses minimal lubricant that doesnot shed into the sample.

A perfect sample means a confident result – and an analyzer that stays reliable, day after day.

SyringeABG™ Preset

Self‑filling for direct arterial puncture • Pre‑set volume • Automatic stop

The plunger is factory‑set to the exact required volume. When the needle enters the artery, arterial pressure automatically fills the syringe; the vent filter stops flow at the precise volume. No aspiration, no guesswork, no air contamination.

  • Available needle gauges: 22G, 23G, 25G thin‑wall
  • Tip cap options: Soft Blue, Orange, Filter Cap
  • Safety version available with integrated needle shield

SyringeABG‑Asp™

Aspirating syringe for arterial lines, low‑pressure patients, CRRT, and hemodialysis

Designed for use with indwelling arterial lines, central lines, or when patient pressure is too low for self‑fill. The syringe features a Luer slip or lock tip for secure connection.

Key applications: ICU arterial lines, CRRT circuits, hemodialysis lines, and neonatal/pediatric draws where low blood pressure requires gentle aspiration.
